Jackie: Interesting, Richard, in the UK traditionally um… what happens is that if a man or a woman get married, the woman takes her husband's surname.
Richard: Yes
Jackie: But um… there are other things that you can do, right. First of all, it is becoming increasingly popular to have a double-barrelled name.
Richard: Ah right, Ok, yes, I remember, when I was a child there were quite a few double-barrels. But I thought that was less popular now?
Jackie: It's something that you can do…
Richard: It's becoming popular again.
Jackie: …so Miss smith marries Mr Jones and they can both be called Mr and Mrs Smith-Jones, for example.
Richard: Right
Jackie: Another popular thing to do is to mesh your surnames.
Richard: Ooooo [laughs]
Jackie: Which means basically joining the two surnames together in a way to make a new word. So for example Miss Smith and Mr Jones could be called Mr and Mrs Smones, or Jith, exactly.
Richard: [laughs] That's ridiculous!
Jackie: And the third thing which is becoming increasingly popular is that the man and the woman they get together and they come up with a completely new surname.
Richard: Right, so get your thinking caps on.
Jackie: Exactly
Richard: We'll have to think of a new name for us.
Jackie: [laughs] Very popuIar
