Richard: Most of our listeners will know that we live in the countryside. But for this week's podcastsinenglish.com we’re talking about our local town, Penela.

Jackie: Yes, it's a small town Richard, isn't it? Um… less than four thousand people and about five minutes drive from where we live.

Richard: Yes, but very pretty.

Jackie: Mmm

Richard: What do you like best about Penela?

Jackie: I think I like it because it's… it’s on a hill.

Richard: Yes

Jackie: And um… around the hill are all these little white houses but right on top of the hill there's a very old castle, I think it was built in 1087. And if you walk up to the castle you just have the most amazing views of the countryside.

Richard: Yes, the countryside, the vineyards and olive trees. And also inside the castle there's quite a pretty church.

Jackie: Yes, yes, so… so that's what I like. What about you, Richard?

Richard: I like the weekly market. Thursday morning, go to the market, the smell of cooking chickens and also lots of fresh fruit and vegetables and fish…

Jackie: You can buy clothes and things like that there though, can't you?

Richard: Yes. Lots of clothes but I must admit I like the… the animals and all the food there.

Jackie: You mean the live animals?

Richard: Yes, chickens…

Jackie: Right

Richard: …and ducks. Hmm. Very nice

Jackie: It’s always… there's always a lot of people there. I think… I think the whole population of Penela goes to the market on a Thursday.

Richard: [laughs] Yes

Jackie: Well, I suppose the market is so popular, Richard, because it is a small town so there's no shopping mall.

Richard: There's no hotel.

Jackie: No. And there's no theatre or anything like that.

Richard: No. But it has everything you need.

JackieThe basics.

Richard: There are two or three banks, lots of cafés, um… a couple of restaurants.

Jackie: There's even, Richard, there's even a small cinema in the library.

Richard: Inside the library, yes. And of course, a couple of schools, and also a sports centre…

Jackie: …with a swimming pool.

Richard: And lots of small shops selling everything you may need.

Jackie: So although Penela is quite small, Richard, I think it's nice to go to Penela and spend a day there maybe to go on a Thursday.

Richard: Yes. See the market.

Jackie: Er… in the morning. And maybe still in the morning walk up to the castle.

Richard: Yes and um… enjoy the view.

Jackie: And then have a nice meal in a restaurant.

Richard: Yes and then in the afternoon go for a walk through the vineyards and the olive groves.

Jackie: Yes, so a nice day out.

Richard: Exactly
