In 1980, the percentage was 15.5%. This then rose to 16.5% in 1981, the highest point during the period shown on the chart. The percentage then fell to 14.5% in 1982 where it remained in 1983. The percentage fell again between 1983 and 1986 (11.5%), before rising slightly to 12% in 1987. The percentage stayed at this level until 1989. From 1989 to 1991, the percentage of income saved rose to 13.596. Between 1991 and 1996, the percentage fell fairly constantly to 8%. Thereafter, there was a slight rise to 10% in 1998, before the percentage fell to 5.5% in 2001, the lowest point over the period shown in the chart. Between 2001 and 2003, the percentage of household income saved by Hong Kong residents rose to 7%.
