Richard: It’s going to be a first for this week’s podcastsinenglish.com because this is our very first recording in our new home.
Jackie: Mmm, we almost didn’t have a recording this week in fact because we are completely surrounded by boxes and mess and it actually took us a long time to find the recording equipment.
Richard: Yes, but um… the builders have gone. They’ve left us basically with an empty shell. Erm… all of the major work’s been done: the walls have been plastered, painted, tiles laid, erm… all the plumbing has been installed, electrics. We’ve even got a solar… solar-powered water heater so all the major things are done but now it’s up to us.
Jackie: Hmm. And one of the things that I’m looking forward to doing, well I’ve just started haven’t I, some of the walls, is to do some painting. Everything’s been painted white at the moment, both the internal and external walls, but I’ve decided that um… for each of the rooms there’s going to be one wall of a different colour. And er… I was hoping to get away with just doing one coat of emulsion paint but in fact two is needed.
Richard: Definitely, definitely. And also obviously all of our clothes, all of our um… things that we own, the ornaments etc are all lying in boxes so we need to create some space. So one of the things I’ve got to do is put up some shelves and make some bookcases, do all those sorts of things.
Jackie: I’m looking forward, Richard, to seeing you… to see you put up the shelving because there’s a bit of a problem in this house, isn’t it?
Richard: Well, it’s an old farmhouse so they’ve got huge, thick, old, stone walls, so drilling into stone is not very easy and then the mortar it seems to be just made of mud, so that’ll be a difficult one. But we shall see.
Jackie: Actually, Richard do you remember you did build some shelves before?
Richard: Leave it out. No need to talk about that shelf. [Jackie laughs] Anyway, moving on. Also for storage erm… a wardrobe. We’re thinking of getting a flat-pack wardrobe.
Jackie: We were thinking about getting a flat-pack, yeah, but in fact we’ve decided it would be much… it would look much nicer in the bedroom and… and perhaps look a bit more professional if we had one fitted.
Richard: Yes, so the carpenter who fitted all the doors he’s going to build a built-in fitted wardrobe for us in the er… our bedroom so that will look fantastic. Erm… what else do we need to do?
Jackie: Um… we’ve got to do some nice things. One of those is to hang all our pictures.
Richard: Fantastic, yes, that’s great.
Jackie: And also in a couple of the rooms we’re going to have curtains so they need to be hung up as well.
Richard: Yes. So and then we can actually unpack all our things. And one final thing, as I look around, we need to do is give the whole place a good cleaning. There’s dust everywhere from all of the work. So. Let’s finish off the podcast and let’s get scrubbing!
Jackie: Ahh! I suppose so. [Richard laughs]
