The number of business person-trips was about 38 million in 1999, falling slightly to 37 million in 2000. Then there was a bigger drop to 32 million in 2001and a further fall to 30 million in 2002, followed by a slight rise to 31 million in 2003.
The number of leisure person-trips was far higher than the number of business ones. In 1999 148 million person-trips were made. There was a small increase on this figure in 2000, when the number was 150 million. Between 2000 and 2001, there was a much larger increase, with 160 million person-trips being made in 2001. The number of person-trips continued to rise, reaching 162 million in 2002 and then 164 million in 2003.
