Now a big talking point as far as office design is concerned is open- planning. Many people have problems with open-plan offices, don't they?
Jackie: Now a big talking point as far as office design is concerned is open- planning. Many people have problems with open-plan offices, don't they?
Richard: Yes. There are many good points, but there are also many bad points about er... open-plan offices.
Jackie: I think on the plus side it's... it's... it can encourage creativity. Workers are more likely to share ideas, for example.
Richard: Yes, but on the other hand um...a lot of workers in open-plan offices complain about a lack of privacy. Er... it's impossible to have a private conversation, for instance.
Jackie: Yes. And you can always hear other people's telephone conversations as well.
Richard: Oh, people talking loudly on the phone, yes, and eating food at their desk as well.
Jackie: And I remember you complaining once about people walking?
Richard: [laughs] It made a loud noise walking on the floor.
Jackie: Because there wasn't a carpet.
Richard: Exactly, yes.
Jackie: Floorboards, yes, so it can be noisy having people walking around.
Richard: And obviously people know exactly what you are doing and also what you're working on on your computer.
Jackie: Well, people can be very nosy looking at what's on your computer screen, looking what's... what's on your desk.
Richard: And people stop by to have a chat as well which can be very distracting.
Jackie: Mmm. And some people have really untidy desks.
Richard: [laughs] Yes they do, Jackie!
Jackie: So thumbs down from me.
Richard: I think... I like open... open-plan offices but there are certainly many downsides as well.
