I’m going to talk about a lake which plays an important role in our country. It is HoanKiem Lake, which is considered the centre of Hanoi, not only physically but also symbolically. In fact, the more you spend time studying about the lake, the more special it becomes.

To my best of the knowledge, the lake is tied to the history of a legend named Le Loi King and his attempt to save our country in the past. The King used a sword for the battle against the war with a neighbouring country before throwing the sword back to the lake. A turtle took the sword and dove down the water. From then on, the lake became HoanKiem lake. It is one of the largest lakes in our country with more than 120 thousand metre squares. It is not only special in her history, the water color of HoanKiem Lake is not commonly found in other lakes elsewhere in the country: greenish, with dark or light shade depending on the reflection of the sky.

This lake is an essential part of our life for many reasons. Firstly, the lake is a pride of all Hanoians, where they always recommend you visiting at first when you come to Hanoi. When darkness takes over, your partner and you can hold hands walking side by side along the lake, try to breathe in the breeze of summer night or keep warmth against the cold winter. Secondly, it is full of turtles, which is second to none to be found among Vietnamese lakes. And because turtle is considered a sacred animal in Vietnam’s culture (along with dragon, phoenix and unicorn), HoanKiem Lake then become a holy place that nurtures them.

All in all, HoanKiem lake plays an important part in my mind where I always reminisce about

when I’m far away from Hanoi.
